Christ at the Centre: Faithfulness in the Hidden Places

“Your Father who sees in secret will reward you.” — Matthew 6:6

Some days in the mission field feel… quiet. No baptisms, no crowds, no songs ringing through the chapel. Just one visit. One conversation. One heart listening.

And yet this, too, is mission.

At Ohlangeni, I recently drove the old bakkie through muddy roads to visit an elderly member who had missed service due to illness. We sat together on her stoep. We read Psalm 23. We prayed. No cameras, no crowd. Just two Christians speaking God’s Word aloud into the fading afternoon.

In a world obsessed with numbers, the Gospel is not. Jesus tells us the Kingdom of Heaven is like a mustard seed. Or a single coin. Or one lost sheep. He reminds us that faithfulness often happens in quiet places — in small churches, around kitchen tables, beside hospital beds.

This is deeply liberating. It frees us from the burden of performing and reminds us to abide — to remain rooted in Christ, who is Lord of the harvest, not we ourselves.

Three encouragements for those serving in small or hidden ministries:

  1. God sees — Not a single act of mercy or word of grace is overlooked by your Father. He sees. He knows.
  2. Small is not insignificant — The church in Philippi began with a riverside conversation. The Gospel grew through households, not campaigns.
  3. Christ is present — Where two or three gather, He is with them. Always.

So don’t be discouraged when the numbers aren’t exciting. God doesn’t need a crowd. He uses crosses, not platforms.

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, help us to be faithful in the small things. Remind us that our value does not come from results but from being found in You. Use even our quiet efforts for the sake of Your Kingdom. Amen.
